Tour around Sugatami Pond

One-hour walking course around Sugatami Pond
Mt. Asahidake and the mystical marsh landscape of Sugatami Pond sprawl out before your eyes. In the area adjacent to Sugatami Pond you can enjoy lush fields of alpine flowers in summer and mountain ridges covered in crimson foliage in autumn. This is a superb location to command an excellent view of the Daisetsu Mountain Range.
A few short steps from Sugatami Ropeway Station and you find yourself in an alpine meadow high above the cloud zone. Here you can enjoy a refreshing stroll through the great outdoors as you walk along the 1.7km-long promenade trail.

The promenade course starts from Sugatami Station and goes toward Sugatami Pond, and after a stop at Jigoku-dani (literally "hells valley") it heads towards Kagami Pond, Suribachi Pond, and Meoto Pond, and returns to the station (you can walk around the course in the direction you like). It takes about one hour to complete the course, including detours and side stops.
From late June through August you can enjoy viewing alpine flowers such as Chinguruma, Kibana Shakunage and Ezo-tsuga-sakura, among others. And in September when the tree leaves are changing color, Miyama Rindo and Miyama Akino Kirinso are in their full bloom, and you can see the cottony fluff of Chinguruma plants.
The pond was named "Sugatami" - literally meaning "to watch one's own silhouette" - because on the water's surface can be seen an inverted reflection of Mt. Asahidake. At the far end of the pond is found Jigoku-dani, an area where 'hell-like' craters emit volcanic fumes. Meoto Pond meanwhile has a beautiful shoreline surrounded by many flowers.
The view of the nearby mountain peaks is also spectacular and you can command an excellent vista of Mt. Yubaridake, Mt. Ashibetsudake and the Tokachidake mountain range. The landscape here makes you feel as if you're promenading through the heavens.
